Tension Heightens in Tawu With Heavy Troops and Restrictions

Following the 15 August incidents of self immolation of monk Tsewang Norbu in Tawu, Kandze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (TAP), while the monks of the Nyitso Monastery were carrying the body of the deceased to the monastery heavy troops were deployed in and around the monastery to restrict entrance. Yet around 10,000 local Tibetans had flocked at the monastery gate. As they tried to access entrance by pushing Public Security Bereau (PSB) police and People Armed Police (PAP) at the gate, nearly 1000 could get inside. The remaining locals surrounded the monastery and performed prayers.

At that time a local called Gyaltsen was severely beaten and arrested. The public gathered there shouted for the release of Gyaltsen. Hence, he was released this morning.

Entrance and exit of the monastery is extremely tightened. All those who are inside the monastery are like not allowed to leave and neither is anyone allowed in.

This morning (16 August), Lui Dao Ping, the Party Secretary of Kandze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (TAP) reached Tawu. All schools, restaurants and cafes in the area were shut down today. Liu Dao Ping ordered to stop the religious rituals and rite for the deceased. He further ordered for the immediate disposal of the dead body.

There are around 270 monks at Nyitse Monastery. Locals and residents of nearby areas fear possible severe crackdown on the monastery by Chinese authorities. Many have come to the monastery to show solidarity and in order to support the monks. Thus, all roads toward Tawo have been blocked by PSB and PAP especially, Nawa Bridge is tightly patrolled and travellers are sent back to their places. One main road on the east, Tsuro Bridge which leads to Tawu is also blocked.

With PSB and PAP patrolling on all streets and at every corner restrictions are ever more escalading in Tawu County. The situation in Tawu is highly tense at the time. The biggest concern, if such curfew on the monastery is to continue for long, is the fear that those held inside the monastery might face water scarcity since drinking water are obtained from outside the monastery.

TCHRD will continue to investigate the situation in Tawo, Kandze. Moreover, the Center expresses serious concern at the plights of Tibetans in Tawu County and urges the international community to pressurize the Chinese Government into restoring normalcy.

PRESS RELEASE

Dharamsala, July 05, 2011: On the eve of the occasion of His Holiness Dalai Lama’s 76th birthday, the Women’s Environment and Development Desk (WEDD) of Tibetan Women’s Association is launching its first phase of sustainable development projects inside Tibet to benefit Tibetan Women, particularly the displaced nomadic women.

The nomadic way of life in Tibet is increasingly under threat from changing social, political and environmental conditions. In September 2010, “The Guardian”, a British newspaper, reported that the Chinese Government is in the advanced stages of relocating between 50% and 80% of the 2.25 million nomads on the Tibetan plateau.  Olivier De Schutter, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, noted in December 2010 that the Tibetan nomads should not be compelled to settle. In addition he noted, “It is Chinese government policy to implement the settling of Tibetan nomads, confiscating their land, and fencing pastoral areas, which has led to increased poverty, environmental degradation and social breakdown.” With no proper source of income the economic conditions of the displaced Tibetan nomads have worsened. According to Human Rights Watch, tens of thousands of Tibetan herders have been required to give up their homes and traditional practices to resettle, generally into urban or township settings where they struggle to establish themselves; in many cases the displacement and forced resettlement results in increased hardships and lower standards of living.The forced eviction of nomads from Tibet’s pasturelands has rendered the nomads without a proper source of income. Moreover, the lives of Tibetan women are adversely impacted. TWA’s WEDD is sponsoring 14 Female Yak (Dri in Tibetan) through Tibet Foundation for 14 displaced nomadic families in the highlands of earth-quake wrecked region of Kyegudo, Kham, in eastern Tibet. This sustainable development project will engage the women in sustainability that will ensure a constant source of income for them and their families. The Tibet Foundation’s Yak for Life is a sustainable programme helping many local people. As a part of our support to the programme, we have sponsored 14 Yaks. Tibet Foundation is a UK charity that has an Aid to Tibet programme with a series of educational and healthcare projects in Tibet.TWA’s WEDD is also launching a short video titled ‘WEDD Green Action.’ The 3-minute video gives a sneak preview to the June 5 – World Environment Day campaign, undertaken by TWA. India hosted for the first time, this year’s United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), a global campaign known as “Forest: Nature at your service”. Five thousand Tibetan women belonging to 33 regional chapters of the Tibetan Women’s Association (RTWA) based in India observed the World Environment Day by planting 20,000 trees in 10 states in India. The video also features the New Delhi campaign in which TWA joined the Indian Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF). The video is viewable on YouTube  http://www.youtube.com/thetwaproductions#p/a/u/0/PFYkJCSQE98 and www.tibet3rdpole.orgThe mission of the Women’s Environment & Development Desk (WEDD) of TWA is to raise awareness about the impacts of climate change upon Tibet’s unique ecosystem and upon the plight of Tibetan women. WEDD desk is committed to disseminating timely and useful information that highlights to the international community the critical issue of climate change in Tibet and engaging in proactive measures, sustainable developmental projects and campaigns to combat the destructive environmental policies that are denying the human rights of Tibetans living inside Tibet.Press Contact;

Shanghai Expo Faces Ongoing Criticism

Saturday, 04 September 2010 19:01 Jimmy Halliday, The Tibet Post International

Oakland: Tibet Week, which is running from September 1 to 5 as part of the Shanghai Expo, continues to face criticism over painting a false picture of life in Tibet.

Tibetan advocacy groups have made clear their concern over the portrayal of Tibetan culture at the expo, with New York based organisation Students for A Free Tibet (SFT) staging an innovative multimedia event outside the Chinese Embassy in NYC to draw attention to various examples of art that have been banned in Tibet.

United Nations For a Free Tibet (UNFFT) also criticized the expo, labeling it ‘A farce and a dishonest attempt by them to fool the world into believing Tibet is doing fine’. To coincide with the event, they have released a video to draw attention to some of the challenges Tibet faces.

ROCK CONCERT FOR A FREE TIBET

30th September 2010 in Kopenhagen (Denmark)

Rock Concert for a free Tibet marks the 60-year for the Chinese invasion of Tibet. Danish musicians and grass roots take now in use loud rock music in the need to shout at China and the Danish government up and protest against the abuses that the occupation of Tibet continue to do. On 30th September World Cultural Center in Nørrebro opens the doors for a concert for a free Tibet. It is held by Støttekomiteen for Tibet (the Support Committee for Tibet) and United Nations for a Free Tibet to highlight and protest against the 60-year for China’s invasion of their peaceful neighbors.

The music is supplied by three different bands all playing for free. The sharp Danish singer-songwriter Kenneth Thordal featuring his own compositions, soulful Metta Carter and Daniel Sedona delivers meditative singing accompanied by UFO drum, and concert main feature is world music band Didi Levy & Same Vibration.
